Exams, Certificates & Diplomas


Italian Language SchoolsCLIDA students earn certificates and diplomas for their mastery of the Italian language. Certification is available for both standard and professional Italian language. These certifications can be used to verify your language skills to current and potential employers.



Standard Language Certification

CLIDA S1 - Certificato Livello Soglia
Students may take the CLIDA S1 exam upon completing the 2nd level of Italian language courses and receive the Certificato Livello Soglia or the Certificate of Achievement in Beginner's Level Italian.
Written Portion:
  • Grammar: multiple choice and fill in the blank—20 questions
  • Comprehension of a short text—15 questions

Oral Portion:
  • Grammar: multiple choice and fill in the blank—20 questions
  • Comprehension of a short text—15 questions
CLIDA S2 - Certificato Livello Avanzato
Students may take the CLIDA S2 exam upon completing the 4th level of Italian language courses and receive the Certificato Livello Avanzato or The Certificate of Achievement in Intermediate Level Italian.
Written Portion:
  • Grammar: multiple choice and fill in the blank—20 questions
  • Summary of a written text
  • Composition—200 word minimum
  • Reading, followed by explanation and questions on grammar and syntax
  • Listening to a tape recorded conversation and answering written questions about the material

Oral Portion:
  • Reading, followed by explanation and questions on grammar and syntax
  • Listening to a tape recorded conversation answering written questions
CLIDA S3 - Certificato Livello Avanzato
Students may take the CLIDA S3 upon completing the 6th level of Italian language courses and receive the Certificato Livello Avanzato or the Certificate of Achievement in Advanced Level Italian.
Written Portion:
  • Fill in the blank
  • Summary of a written text
  • Writing verbatim what is dictated
  • Composition—250 word minimum

Oral Portion:
  • Interview
  • Reading, followed by explanation and questions on grammar and syntax
  • Listening and answering questions about what was spoken
CLIDA S4 - Certificato Livello Superiore
Students may take the CLIDA S4 upon completing the 8th level of Italian language courses and receive the Certificato Livello Avanzato or the Certificate of Achievement in Superior Level Italian.
Written Portion:
  • Fill in the blank
  • Summary of a written text
  • Writing verbatim what is dictated
  • Composition—250 word minimum

Oral Portion:
  • Interview
  • Reading, followed by explanation and questions on grammar and syntax
  • Listening and answering questions about what was spoken
CLIDA DA - Diploma "Dante Alighieri"
Students may take the CLIDA DA upon completing the 9th level of Italian language courses and receive the Diploma of Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri.
Written Portion:
  • Submission of a written thesis (30 pages)
  • Two summaries (brief and detailed)
  • Transition (direct speech into indirect speech)
  • Paraphrasing

Oral Portion:
  • Discussion of submitted thesis
  • Reading and paraphrasing



Professional Language Certification


CLIDA exams are internationally recognized by the Latin Union as an official certificate for the knowledge of Italian language in all countries speaking neo-Latin languages. The professional exams listed below are recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Education (BM: BWK) and Chamber of Commerce. These exams have also been developed and carried out with contributions from the of European Commission's Leonardo Project.

After passing the tests listed below, earn certificates for the knowledge of professional language:

CLIDA P3 - Professionale Tre
This test may be taken at the end of the 3rd level.
Written Portion:
  • Comprehension
  • Letter
  • Report
Oral Portion:
  • Role playing
  • Report in German or English
Listening Comprehension:
  • Comprehension 1 - notes
  • Comprehension 2 - fax
  • Comprehension 3 - SMS message

CLIDA P5 - Professionale Cinque
This test may be taken at the end of the 5th level.
Written Portion:
  • Notes
  • Letter
  • Report and comment
Oral Portion:
  • Role playing
  • Report in German or English
  • Interview for a job
  • Reading and reporting
Listening Comprehension:
  • Comprehension 1 - message
  • Comprehension 2 - Notes
  • Comprehension 3 - Memo

CLIDA TC -Turistico Commerciale
This test may be taken at the end of the 6th level.

Written Portion:
  • Fill in the blank test
  • Summary of a text
  • Transition (direct into reported speech)
  • Composition (180 word minimum)
Oral Portion:
  • Interview
  • REading, grammar and explanation of a text
  • Listening and answering
Listening Comprehension:
  • Dictation
  • Draft of a memo
  • Comprehension 3 - Memo
  • Draft of a fax



International Certification


Twice a year the CLI Dante Alighieri in Florence holds the Certificate of "Conoscenza" exam CLIDA-S abroad. The exams are open to students of any age and from any school. For our younger students, the center has created a special "Junior" exam called Primo, Secondo, e Terzo allowing youths up to the age of 14 to participate. Students over the age of 15 will take our "Senior" exam CLIDA-S. Upon request, the CLI Dante Alighieri will send a detailed program of all the exams as well as the dates and places where they will be held.
